Upper East Side Townhouse

New York, NY

This twenty-one-foot-wide townhouse dates to 1890. Over the course if its lifetime it had been divided into apartments and stripped of most of its original detailing. The clients asked us to create a more open plan, bring in natural light, and to enhance the architectural character of the building for a more stately and welcoming home.

The extensive gut renovation involved stripping the interior of the house down to its original structure, excavating the basement level, removing the rear wall of the home, and tearing off the existing roof. This demolition work allowed for the ceiling heights throughout the house to be raised, the depth of the building to be increased, and an additional fifth floor to be added. The floorplans were also completely transformed; the dark cellar became a light-filled kitchen with open living and dining space, the parlor floor was transformed into three distinct spaces for entertaining, and the master bedroom suite expanded to encompass an entire floor. New services were installed throughout the townhouse including central air, a sprinkler system, and an elevator. Custom millwork and classic finishes were designed in close conversation with the clients ensuring their long-lasting happiness in this beautiful home.
